A lot of the people hold bleak view about Islam. Recently, I had a discussion with someone having such an outlook. The conversation started with the primary question about what is Islam. I said that Islam is a religion to be understood, that it a way of life. Being a simplistic answer as it is, the person expressed the notion that is generally held by people who are not positive of Islam’s potential for human guidance. The person said that it is a geo-political belief system which has world domination as its ultimate aim.

Now, what does a Muslim say to that, or for that matter, anyone who knows Islam and its teachings, how can one explain a view being associated with it, which is in essence completely contrary to its basic preaching? The briefest answer that I could have given at the time to comprehensively sum up the whole view which is right, and which ought to be linked with any religion, is that no religion in its essence seeks the world. Thinking of this very idea of world domination is against the concept of religion itself.

Still in disagreement, the person came up with another more exaggerated view saying that it has its source in the Koran itself. The person asked me to pick up the Koran and read it and further presented me with a request, not in a polite way, saying that I should go on reading the Koran instead of making “stupid” statements. To such a thing, I could only politely reply that I am a Muslim and have read the Koran many times over. It is a book to be read time and again so that each time a deeper meaning to its highest messages could be understood. I further asked her pointing out the intolerance in her behavior to show some tolerance of discussion on this social forum, which has essentially been created to discuss various things. Such people often miss the hypocrisy of their own act when they call Muslims intolerant and don’t have the nerve to discuss when the truth not to their liking is being told.

After listening to all this, the person went back again to the initial point, which she thought was a strong one and worth reiterating that “Tell me that the aim of Islam is not world domination. Tell me that it does not require the destruction of all infidels, who will not convert to Islam.” If such a distorted view is something that she is willing to adhere to without knowing the facts, then nothing could be done to help elaborate the truth. All one could explain is that Islam is not a religion asking for world domination and neither infidels should be killed for practicing the freedom of belief system that the Lord has granted them with. To realize this approach of Islam, I think one has to read its history, its real concepts and its real philosophy. Islam is not a religion of force, neither was it spread through sword.

The level of knowledge with such allegations she had shown about Islam is a definite telling that she knows nothing about the religion in actuality. I did express to her what I inferred through her comments. To which she did not flinch a bit calling me a liar. Ironic, is not it? She can choose not to believe me, it is of course her right. But if someone really wants to know about Islam, not from the one who has been following it with an understanding of its concepts, then they should read the books that have been written on the subject, watch the documentaries that have been made covering its stories and ideas, study the works of scholars that have presented Islam not with an exaggerated rosy image, but with what its truthful teachings are. The works of authentic scholars go a long way in establishing something for certain, but only if their efforts to understand are understood and the things that they understood as men of higher learning be understood, the purpose of their works will be served well in this way.

Considering the conversation she was making, I told her that one should be knowledgeable before passing statements. In order to support her statements, she shared an article written by some W. Armenious from the USA on July 14, 2002, in which it was mentioned how brutal Muslims are. That they prosecute non-Muslims in their own territories and that the Koran supports their inhumane behavior. Perhaps the point has not been established. I am not so sure when it will. Because the day that it does amongst those people who question Islam’s teachings, the world would really be a better place with an understandable environment and with an air of tolerance and co-existence. For someone choosing to believe that Islam is a religion of violence and that Muslims are violent people, though it is impossible for any nation, let alone Muslims or Islam, to be that uncivilized, it is again their freedom to think. It is useless to convince such people otherwise.

But, for the one who seeks the truth about one of the most important global matters that effect societies, then one must get educated about the people involved and about their issues, about Muslims and their problems. To begin with, “Islam” by Karen Armstrong is not a bad 101 course in getting introduced to one of the largest faiths in this world. And like this one, there are plenty of other authentic sources available to get informed by. Since there is a lot of propaganda involved as well, one has to be very careful in what one is relying on when learning about anything. But for sure, common sense does say that it is utterly wrong to go on believing in something which is false. It is in the end self-deceptive to continue to do so.

After explaining her whatever her thoughts about Islam are, are all based on false notions which have been propagated to incur hatred against the religion and its followers, and after requesting her to be tolerant in discussing the matter with patience and open-mindedness, she still told me to “Get away from me with your nonsense. We can all see what is going on in Egypt with Coptic Christians being slaughtered, and the same thing in Sudan. Your religion of peace is indeed a religion of Satan.”

To again corroborate her outrageous behavior, views, and false statements, she presented another article from the same author which said more or less the same things. The level of her outrage did not end here. To show her own level of low tolerance for understanding Muslims and their religion and her attempts to defame it, she blocked me so that no further correspondence could take place on that social platform and whatever that she has written be there with no replies from me, a Muslim, to defend her religion, her faith, and her fellow Muslims. It goes to show, who is tolerant and who is not, whose teachings and traditions have taught them to give a hand to others in guidance towards the truth and whose not.

By Fatima Ashraf

Earth Day was established in 1970 to raise awareness about the environment. Islam however, did more than that; it provided clear directives for action, as early as the seventh century. The Quran is filled with ayats and the Sunnah is filled with actions, on how to be stewards of the Earth.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “the Earth is a Mosque.” You can pray anywhere. The entire planet is meant to be a place for worship of its Creator. You can kneel down in awe and gratitude of Allah on grass, on sand, on a mountain, in a cornfield. Therefore, the planet and its people deserve to be protected.

To demonstrate the connection between Islam and the environment, let’s talk about waste, water, watts, and food. These four topics are especially important because civilizations have been built and destroyed on their ability or inability to manage them. Think about it – a society that cannot remove its trash, preserve its water, create energy, and distribute food – will not flourish. As Muslim-Americans who live in this country, we create waste, drink water, use energy, and eat food. We need to start thinking responsibly about our actions and how they impact the environment. Knowing what our Deen says about being Green is the perfect place to start.

America leads the world in waste production. We are less than 5% of the world’s population and create over 25% of the entire world’s waste.

In the Quran, Allah says, “Corruption has appeared on the land and in the sea because of what the hands of humans have wrought. This is in order that We give them a taste of the consequences of their misdeeds that perhaps they will turn to the path of right guidance.” (30:41) Scholars have cited “corruption” in this ayat to be synonymous with “pollution” or “waste”. “The path of right guidance,” likely means the path of justice and righteousness towards the planet.

We have become a society that takes water for granted. The average American uses 150 gallons of water PER DAY. Those in developing countries barely use 5 gallons per day. Still 1.1 billion people on the planet do not have access to safe and clean drinking water.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) urged moderation and thriftiness in the use of water. He warned against wasting water when doing wudu, even if one lives near a river. Water is from God and should therefore be freely available to all. There is a stipulation in the Sha’riah that prohibits the sale of water. If one is selling water, for example, the bottled water vendors at Hajj, they cannot charge for the fluid. They can only charge for the cost of the packaging.

The United States consumes 5 times more watts of energy than China and renewable energy only accounts for 7% of our energy use.

Non-renewable sources are extracted from the ground. They are taken from the Earth. Renewable sources are gifts that come from above. Allah reminds us repeatedly in the Quran of the power of the sun and wind. “Among His Signs is this, that He sends the winds, as heralds of glad tidings, giving you a taste of His Mercy – that the ships may sail by his command and that you may seek of His Bounty…”(30:46) Allah reminds us that wind is a useful blessing!

As the worlds super power and richest country on the planet, still millions of Americans do not have access to healthy food. In New York City alone, 3 million people live in “food deserts,” neighborhoods without grocery stores or access to fresh fruits and vegetables.

Allah allows us to eat heartily, but warns us against excessiveness. “O Children of Adam! Wear your beautiful apparel at every time and place of prayer: eat and drink; But waste not by excess, For Allah loveth not the wasters.” (7:31) it’s amazing how much food is wasted each day while millions around the globe are starving.

There is also a Sunnah of Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) that while eating, take the food out from the side and not the middle. Eat from the food, which is closest to you. While this Sunnah is about serving oneself food, I thought, could it also mean to buy local?

April 22, 2010 is the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. As Muslims, how will we protect the planet, not just on this one day, but every day? Ibrahim Abdul-Matin, author of the new book,”Green Deen: What Islam Teaches About Protecting the Planet,” is preparing to launch a nationwide movement for Muslims called “Green Ramadan.” This movement is about three things: 1) getting Muslims and mosques across the country to adopt Green principles for the holy month; 2) showing the power of the Muslim community and how great our contribution to the environmental movement can be; 3) inspiring Muslims to look to their Deen for guidance on how to be stewards of the Earth.

It’s time for Muslims to build a movement for everyone, every day, not just on Earth Day.

There are certain things that the soul often confuses and mixes up, and only those with deep insight and wisdom are able to properly distinguish them. Ibn al Qayyim points out some of these fine details and distinctions that should be made.

i) Self-Respect vs. Vanity

“Self-respect is to make your soul rise above the petty and insignificant things that cause people to bend their necks pursuing. So, he prevents himself from this.

This is different from arrogance, which is a characteristic that is born from two things: being impressed with oneself and belittling others. So, arrogance is born from these two things, and the first (i.e. self-respect) is born from two things: honoring oneself and making it noble…

The basis for all of this is to prepare and condition the soul, and to place preference for its Owner over it. So, if one fails in his preparation and conditioning, he has failed in everything.”

ii) Protection of Self vs. Arrogance

“The one who protects himself is like the man who puts on some new clothes, pure and white, and expensive. So, he enters upon the kings and those below them in these clothes. He strives to protect these clothes from any stains or dirt that could affect its whiteness and purity. So, you see him looking noble and constantly escaping from the places where he fears could make his clothes dirty. He does not allow any stain or speck of dirt to come onto his clothes.

This is the likeness of the one who strengthens and builds his heart and religion: you see him avoiding any stains of sin, as they stain the heart and dirty it more than any blot of dirt can dirty a pure, white garment. However, the eyes are covered from seeing these stains. So, you see him running from any potential stain, being cautious around the people, seldom mixing with them out of fear that the same thing would occur to his heart that occurred to his white clothing when he was around the butchers and cooks.

This is different from the one who elevates himself, as even if he is similar to the above in his avoidance of these things, he intends with this to step over the people’s necks and to put them under his feet. So, this is a color, and that is another color.”

iii) Humility vs. Humiliation

“Humility is born from a) knowledge of Allah, His Names, His Attributes, and His Loftiness, as well as loving and elevating Him, and b) knowing himself and his faults well.

So, from these two comes the characteristic of humility, and it is the subduing of the heart to Allah and lowering the wing of submission and mercy to His servants. So, he does not see any virtue that he has over others, and he sees no rights of his over others. Rather, he sees the virtue of others over him, and he sees their rights before his own. This is a characteristic that Allah gives to those He Loves and wishes to make noble and close to Him.

As for humiliation, it is lowliness and exertion of the soul in acquiring what it desires, like the humility of the low ones in fulfilling their desires, the humility of the victim to his oppressor, and the humility of anyone who seeks something from someone else to that person. This is all lowliness and inferiority, and has nothing to do with true humility. Allah Loves humility, and He hates lowliness and humiliation. It is reported in the ‘Sahih’ that the Messenger of Allah said:”It was revealed to me that you should be humble such that none should boast over others, and none should transgress against others.”"

Every human being has many aspects of his life. One may excel in one or two of them. Iqbal not only had multidimensional personality but he excelled in all of them. He was a par excellence poet, a magnificent philosopher, outstanding scholar, a great historian, an outstanding writer, a political analyst, a superb leader and a wonderful human being. Leaders like Iqbal are born in centuries. Iqbal is not merely a Pakistani Philosopher, poet and visionary; he is in the hearts of Afghans and Iranians.

Vision is the supreme virtue of human intellect. Great visionary leaders can see in the future and guide their nations through different turmoil and hardships to ultimate success. On the other hand leaders without vision or tunnel vision can plunge their nations into disasters. Iqbal had great vision which can see centuries ahead.

Unlike most great poets and philosophers, he was very practical man who participated in hectic political activities and society reforming movements. He earned his own bread and was quite content person. He went to the skies as he detached himself from the earthly greed and materialism. He would simple not accept any case as an advocate no matter how much you offer him once his budget of the month acquired. The rest of the time he devoted to the humanity.

Iqbal’s love with Quran is eveident from the fact that he used to recite Quran day and night and used to cry and weep so that the copy of Quran used to get wet, which was then taken by his servant to the roof to dry it in the sun. Iqbal’s powerful, elegant, superb and artistic command on language along with his wittiness, eloquence is directly derived from Quran-e-Majeed. When great Italian leader Mussolini asked him from where he gets his wisdom, he simply pointed to Quran-e-Kareem.

Iqbal is not hopeless from his nation. He said that this earth is very fertile if it is little wet. Iqbal has motivated youth to get detached from petty materialistic goals and objectives. He shows that their destination is beyond stars.(By- Anwar ul Haque)

It is important for us to prepare for the Holy Month of Ramadan in order to reap the maximum benefits from this month. Rasulullah (may the prayers of Allah and peace be upon him) and his noble Sahabah (may Allah be pleased with them) used to look forward to the coming of the blessed month of Ramadan. The Holy Prophet (sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) would say in his supplications:

Allahumma barik lana fi Rajab wa Sha’ban wa ballighna Ramadan
“Allah bless us in the month of Rajab and Sha’ban and help us to meet and spend Ramadan (in a deserving manner).”

Ramadan is the month of excitement and enlightenment for Muslims. It is the month of revelation of the Holy Qur’an, the month of reading and reciting the entire Qur’an, the month of tahajjud and qiyamul layl, of tarawih prayers, of sadaqah, zakatul fitr, and zakatul mal.

No one can go anywhere without preparation, and no one invites a guest without preparing to welcome him/her. Similarly, to welcome Ramadan — the month of fasting — one has to prepare. The following are some tips to help you receive and welcome this noble month of Ramadan.

1. Try to fast on Mondays and Thursdays, as of today.
2. Start reading Qur’an daily after Salatul Fajr.
3. Spend some time listening to recitations from the Qur’an.
4. Train yourself to go to bed early so that you can wake up for Salatul Fajr.
5. Keep yourself in a state of wudu’ at all times.
6. Evaluate yourself daily before going to bed. Thank Almighty Allah for all the good deeds you do, and repent to Him for your mistakes and sins.
7. Give yourself some time alone, so that you can meditate, make dhikr, tasbih, takbir, tahmid, tahlil, and other forms of dhikr. You will experience spiritual elevation and you will enjoy life tremendously.
8. Those who can afford to make ‘Umrah before Ramadan comes should do so, and those who are able to perform ‘Umrah in Ramadan should do so. ‘Umrah in Ramadan is equivalent to (the reward of) a hajj.
9. Start giving (charity) daily, no matter how little it is. Make it a habit, like eating and drinking.
10. Find time to pray extra nawafil (optional) salah, such as Salatul Duha, Qiyamul Layl, and Salatul Tahajjud. (note: If you have fardh – obligatory – prayers to make up, it is much more important to fulfill those first.)
11. Spend more time reading Islamic books, especially the Holy Qur’an, books on Seerah (the life of the Messenger of Allah), hadith, and fiqh.
12. Find time to help others with your wisdom, knowledge, and other talents.
13. Try to write articles on Islam for Muslims and others for non-Muslims.
14. Associate with Muslim scholars, ‘ulama, and pious believers so that you may learn from them.
15. Train yourself to do good, no matter how insignificant it may seem, and render useful service to others.
16. Try to learn how to make da’wah to non-Muslims, and engage in this noble activity. It is an art requiring knowledge and training.
17. Try to spend more time with your family, and remind them to prepare for Ramadan as well.

After the first century of Mohammad P.B.U.H and his close companions, Islam started being wrapped by concepts that either were crafted or were borrowed by other religions. Unfortunately such concepts became exactly Islam in next centuries. This was the time when an attempt of conveying the real objective of Islam and removing the veils of mistaken and misinterpreted thoughts could make Muslims feel a drift from religion. Obviously it was an unmanageable situation but the world of Islam found an eye which could see real Islam hidden behind thousands veils and a tongue that knew the psychological state of his audience – Mohammad Iqbal. The centre of his thoughts was Qur’an. He never considered himself a poet but used poetry as a medium to deliver his message considering the circumstances and customs of the country. For him Qur’an was a book that emphasized “deed” rather than “idea”. Obviously, a person who understands Qur’an very well, understands the world very well and knows the real issues of the world and their solution.

Iblees ki Majlis e Shura is one of Allama Iqbal’s final works. Sort of his last opinion on the world.

Iblees is sitting with his five advisors and starts a meeting with self-praising statements and explains what he has done so far to take the world at this stage. First advisor affirms his strategies and explains the state of people around the world. Second advisor reminds them about a threat. But first advisor corrects him and refutes his fear. Third advisor reminds them about another “serious” threat. Forth advisor provides the solution to that threat. Fifth advisor explains that “serious” threat again in more detail to let Iblees understand the seriousness of the matter. Iblees who is listening to all advisors refutes all of the fears that they have but discloses his own fear and considers it a “Real” threat to his satanic system. He explains why he is afraid of that threat and then he finally tells them what to do.

I am sharing a few lines here from this awesome piece of thought!

Allah Almighty (SWT) says:

“(O Beloved!) Read (commencing) with the name of Allah (SWT) Who has created (everything).”

Everything created in the universe is attributed to the Creator as He is the Creator of the entire universe. So, the knowledge we acquire must also pertain to everything in the universe. The earth and the sky, the moon and the sun, the stars and planets, the vastness of oceans and the meandering flow of rivers from hills to the sea down through plains, the torrents and the violent waves, the rhythm of waterfalls, blossoming of buds, the sunrise and the sunset, the freshness of vegetable world, the flora of plants, the splendour of the trees and variety of stones, the charming fragrance and pleasant colours of leaves and fruits and, so to say, the entire universe and its contents are but the creation of the One and the Only Lord. He has no partners or peers; He is Matchless and Singular.
