I happened to recently hear Shehzad Roy’s latest release, “Qismat Apnay Haat Mein” and must admit that I was pleasantly surprised to hear it. Compared to his earlier albums, Qismet Apnay Haat Mein stands out because of the unique focus on the plight of Pakistan and it’s so-called leaders.

This is what Faisal Qureshi thinks about Shehzad’s latest efforts…

Album Review: Shehzad Roy’s ‘Qismet Apnay Haath Mein’

Shehzad Roy pulls off another Saali in Qismet Apnay Haath Mein.

lt’s easy to see where Shehzad Roy is coming from with his latest album, Qismet Apnay Haath Mein, launched this Friday, given his efforts to introduce wide-scale reforms in the government’s education sector under the aegis of the Zindagi Trust, along with Sami Mustafa of CAS. A case in point is the Fatima Jinnah Government School in Karachis Garden West area which has been turned into a premier academic institution with state-of-the-art computer lab and classrooms, improvised teaching methods and syllabus – all aimed towards gearing the students to explore and discover.

Back to the launch, and a very ingenious one at that, it was held at the juvenile jail with the aim that the sentences of all inmates who have performed well would be slashed by two months! And that brings us to the video of Laga Rahe, a political comment on the way things are in this country of ours. Ingeniously done, the Laga Rahe video zooms in on specific events that have rocked the very foundations Pakistan was founded on and stands firmly on today such as the restoration of the CJ and the judiciary’s wide-scale protests, the self-serving interests of corrupt politicians, rising inflation, increasing crime, the myopic views of the common man, the insurgence of foreign intelligensia and what have you.

And this is not where it ends. Qismet Apne Haath Mein (QAHM) has been written, composed and produced by Shehzad Roy himself with some very interesting artwork on the cover jacket, such as the imprint of a hand bound by chains drawn by a primary student to illustrate the sense of deprivation rampant among the underprivileged class. Touching, to say the very least. But what is heartening is that Shehzad Roy acts as a filter and has infused a myriad of such voices in QAHM the album.

“According the Constitution of Pakistan one cannot make any claim about the life of the Quaid-i-Azam that is not based on actual, established fact. But the message for young kids here is that just because a child is mischievous or scores low on an exam in school does not mean that he will not do great things in his adult life,” says Shehzad Roy.

Other than Laga Rahe, another track infused with a strong sense of social awareness is the title song, Qismet Apne Haath Mein, that discusses some more of the same, and of how a few people with vested interests are pulling the strings of the entire nation. A real shocker once you get down to lending an attentive ear to the vocals.

The same goes for yet another track, Khul Ke Pyar, that reeks of teenage rebellion with some strategically placed and rather interesting guitar riff that gives risqué meaning to the preceding vocals.

Roy skirts fringes of controversy yet again with Quaid-i-Azam, only this time he does it to familiarise and better acquaint the larger-than-life national hero with children and make him a role model whom they can easily relate to. He does so by suggesting that the young Mohammed Ali Jinnah, too, must have asked his grandmother to tell him stories and learned from his mistakes during his formative years.

All seemingly innocent, but demanding a lot of painstaking research as according to Roy: “According the Constitution of Pakistan one cannot make any claim about the life of the Quaid-i-Azam that is not based on actual, established fact. But the message for young kids here is that just because a child is mischievous or scores low on an exam in school does not mean that he will not do great things in his adult life.”

The rest of the album is peppered with listener-friendly ballads bearing the typical Roy signature. However, the afore-mentioned tracks are the real reason any self-respecting Pakistani should make an effort to buy the album, given the lack of sponsorship for Qismet Apnay Haath Mein due to the mildly explosive nature of the tracks therein. The way I look at it, any socially-conscious performing artiste whose music is geared towards a definitive direction when it comes to social reforms deserves such treatment from his countrymen who have the singer’s qismet literally in the palm of their hands.

Our two cent on the Wonder Boy’s second album.

Ahmed Jehanzeb has proven himself to be a talented musician. So far he has one hit album to his credit as well as several title songs for Pakistani television dramas and the one-off collaboration for a song on Shoaib Mansoor’s Khuda Kay Liye soundtrack.

I quote here from his album sleeve: I am what I am only because of the true love, guidance and comfort provided to me by my family. They are the foundation and proof of (who) I am. I thank my family especially my father, Capt. Sabir Ahmed, without whose support I would have never achieved what I have today.

Jehanzeb further shows his understanding of music’s (spiritual) nature when he outlines his philosophy in these words: I strongly believe in the saying ‘Music is food for the Soul’. It is the best way of communication. In my point of view music provides purity and clarity to one’s soul. It is the truest form of expression for an artist. True music requires education, training, hard work & like any other field, raw talent has to be nurtured and that is the reason I was given the opportunity to educate myself in the art of classical music.

His recent album, Laut Aao, predictably starts off with the song released earlier as a single and used in the promotional video of the album, Chandni Raat Mein. The single demonstrates that Ahmed isn’t just all about sad ditties. This one’s more contemporary and has a faster tempo than his earlier sombre style. Interestingly, Ahmed humbly gives all the credit for the success of the song to the video director, Kookie V. Gulati.

If Chandni Raat Mein sets the tone, Mein Aur Tu is evidence that people with contrasting composition styles should work together (Sachin Gupta and Ahmed in this case) on a joint composition if they compliment each other. The more rock-inspired composition of Sachin blends almost organically with Ahmed’s melodic vocals and rather haunting compositions.

In Bol Mahiya Ve the opening sequence featuring the vocals (in English) by Tara Baswani is yet another organic progression which gives way to a near-qawwali harmonium synthesised effect in mid-song. Ahmed’s advanced control over folk singing shines through this very interesting tune. Lagan Lagi, however, disappoints as it is in the ‘please Bollywood’ mode and is uselessly techno in its sound. Ahmed’s vocals don’t go very well (despite his best efforts) with this sort of music. Up next is the title track, Laut Aao, and despite being a haunting number it isn’t exactly the best song in the album due to the remix effect. The song could have done without the brrr-ing effect which is mostly distracting for the listener.

Tere Bina Jeena is another song that Ahmed must be swearing by as the album’s next hit (he has even included a blues-mix version of the song towards the end accompanying similar rehashed versions of Chandni Raat Mein and Mein Aur Tu). While the song is lively, it seems short on something. Dekha Mein Ne Nahin is another song possibly composed for a Bollywood production rather than being a pop number.

Amazingly, Jiss Ko Bhi Lageya is vintage Ahmed at the start coupled with some vintage rock guitar during the chorus. This is one song that can be predicted as a true hit. Jab Tumhari Yaad is again in Ahmed’s newfound ‘pop-rock’ style. It comes across as one where the singer is probably burying his past and preparing to move on.

The rock infusion seems to have added a contemporary feel to Ahmed’s work, and one feels it would be fantastic if he can follow up more on this style of music composition.

Sajjad Ali is one of the most respected singers in the Pakistan music industry today. he has managed to consistently deliver quality music and he has proven time and again, that he has what it takes to outlast all his contemporaries. Sajjad Ali has constantly re-invented himself with every album he has put out. He started of as a neo-classical ghazal singer, discovered mass appeal as a pop singer and then became more of a filmi/background singer. Now he has returned with his latest effort “Chahar Balish” which still contains his trademark addictive melodies, but finds him in a more somber mood.

Chahar Balish’s sound is refreshingly different and progressive. The very well-sung, techno-laden folk in Pekar (language?), the delightfully rhythmed and sung Rang laga, the soulful Gaddiye and Dil pareeshan, the filmi Katna nai and the western structure in Chal ren de are fascinating. What doesn’t work however is the resurgence of Sajjad’s own hit, ABBA knock-off (Lay all your love on me) Bolo bolo, and Nai thakda, evoking embarrassing memories of the singer’s Cinderella days! This is Sajjad Ali’s most accomplished work yet – his impressive and flexible vocals, and the lively experimentations in tune and backgrounds are in top form!
